Dear Baking Lover,
Just on 30 years ago, while living in the United States, I published The German Pastry Bakebook, a collection of traditional German baking techniques and recipes. Much of the knowledge and recipes in that book had been handed down through my family over the generations. With the joy and pleasure of German baking playing such an important role in my life, I wanted to share this with others and the book idea was born.
Then, in 1984, I moved with my family to Christchurch, New Zealand. While baking was still a large part of my life (and my family’s pleasure!), given its population size, the audience for German baking was much smaller in New Zealand. It became more of a hobby than a profession as I helped raise my children in a land far away from the United States, and the book soon went out-of-print.
But living in the age of the internet makes it possible once again to launch German Pastry Baking, hence this website in the making.
Over the coming months, I’ll be publishing baking techniques and recipes from my old book and adding other interesting ideas that I’ve collected over the years. Whether you're just starting out, or are a professional, I hope that my recipes will help you kindle a love for German baking.
To me, there is nothing more sweeter in life than to create and experience the culinary delights of the traditional German baking craft. So I cannot describe how joyful it is to now share this love with a global audience.
Please, enjoy the site as it grows over the coming months. And if you ever have any questions on the techniques or recipes, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Guten Appetit!

Margit Stoll Dutton
